El Arzobispo emérito de Santiago de Cuba, Pedro Meurice Estiú, quien falleció el jueves en Miami a la edad de 79 años a consecuencia de un paro cardíaco, sera honrado en esta ciudad durante el fin de semana, antes de que su cadaver sea enviado a Cuba.

Las honras fúnebres a Monseñor Meurice, uno de los más fuertes críticos a la dictadura cubana en el episcopado cubano, se celebrarán el domingo en la Ermita de la Caridad.

Durante la visita a Cuba de Juan Pablo II, en enero de 1968, En la plaza Antonio Maceo de Santiago de Cuba, ante el gobierno en pleno encabezado por Raúl Castro, , Meurice habló de la falta de libertades y esperanzas de los cubanos, quienes necesitaban “aprender a desmitificar los falsos mesianismos”.

El lunes está prevista una misa de cuerpo presente en la Catedral de San Mary de la Diócesis de Miami, que será presidida por el Arzobispo Tomas Wensky y varios prelados cubanos que han llegado a Miami desde la isla.

El sepelio de Meurice tendrá lugar la próxima semana en el Cementerio Santa Ifigenia de Santiago de Cuba.

The Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, Dionisio Garcia Ibanez, described the aggression visited upon the Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White) this past Sunday in El Cobre as undignified and unjustifiable.

“For the events that took place, there is no justification nor motive; the acts were undignified and unjustifiable,” declared Garcia in a statement to the press, adding that the violence took place in the street near the Sanctuary, after the women had left.

Dama de Blanco Belkys Cantillo Ramirez and 15 Damas de Apoyo (Ladies of Support) visited the church to pray for the liberty of Cuban political prisoners and participate in Sunday mass. Upon leaving the church, they walked two blocks and were assaulted by Cuban state security.

“Moreover, differences shouldn’t be resolved in this way. The ladies came to see me this very afternoon, and yes, they had to go to the hospital. They were very mistreated, very mistreated. What motives can you have to assault women?” said Garcia. “I will act as I think I ought to,” he added.

El Arzobispo de Santiago de Cuba, Dionisio García Ibañez, calificó de indigna e injustificable la agresión que sufrieron las Damas de Blanco el pasado domingo en El Cobre.

“Los acontecimientos pasaron; ahí no hay justificación ni motivo; fue una cosa indigna, injustificable”, declaró monseñor García a la prensa, quien agregó que la agresión ocurrió en la calle, después que las mujeres habían bajado del Santuario.

La Dama de Blanco Belkys Cantillo Ramírez y 15 Damas de Apoyo fueron a orar por la libertad de los prisioneros políticos y tras participar en la misa salieron del templo, y a dos cuadras de allí fueron víctimas de un violento acto de repudio.

“Además, las diferencias no se deben resolver de esa manera. Ellas vinieron a verme por la tarde ese mismo día, y sí, tuvieron que ir al hospital, fueron muy maltratadas, muy maltratadas. ¿Qué motivos puede haber para agredir a unas mujeres?” se cuestionó García. “Actuaré como creo que lo debo hacer”, agregó.

Ex Cuban Foreign Minister Roberto Robaina has taken another step into Cuba’s culinary establishment and opened another restaurant in Havana, the second belonging to his family, he announced in an email distributed Tuesday intended to “whet the appetite.”

“We’re proud to announce the opening of Chaplin’s Cafe, with breakfast from 9:00 a.m. and a tapas bar with service well into the night. We’d love to see you there,” said the one-time minister in his message.

In April of this year the ex-chancellor opened La Paila, his first restaurant in Havana, calling the establishment “a family business.” Now Chaplin’s Cafe joins the family chain as the second restaurant owned by the Robaina family.

The restaurant’s publication boasts of “superb coctails, an exquisite selection of tapas and now with warm breakfasts,” all served from its location in central Havana on 23 Street in the Vedado district.

Robaina was dismissed from his post in 1999, accused by Raul Castro of disloyalty and of taking illicit money from then-governor of Quintana Roo Mario Villanueva, extradited last year to the United States on charges of narcotrafficking.

El excanciller Roberto Robaina, se ha convertido en todo un empresario gastronómico y ha abierto otro restaurante en La Habana, el segundo en manos de su familia, informó él mismo en un correo electrónico distribuido el martes, para promover el “paladar”

“Acabamos de abrir Chaplin’s Café, con servicio de desayuno a partir de las 9:00 am y bar de tapas hasta bien entrada la noche. Nos gustaría verte por allá”, dijo el otrora dirigente del régimen en su mensaje.

En abril de este año, se informó sobre la apertura del restaurante La Paila, también propiedad de Robaina, pero el excanciller, dijo que era un “negocio de la familia”. Ahora el Chaplin’s Café se suma a la cadena familiar Robaina.

“Excelente coctelería, exquisita selección de tapas y ahora con cálidos desayunos”, dice la publicidad del Chaplin’s Café, localizado en la céntrica Calle 23 de El Vedado.

Robaina fue destituido en 1999, y acusado en un video por Raúl Castro de deslealtad y de recibir dinero del entonces gobernador de Quintana Roo, Mario Villanueva, acusado de narcotráfico y extraditado el año pasado a Estados Unidos.

On Sunday, police and paramilitary elements assaulted 16 members of the Cuban human rights group Damas de Blanco near the exit of the National Sanctuary of the Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre in Santiago, the Archbishop of Santiago confirmed in the Cuban digital publication Diario de Cuba.

“The women did not offend anybody; they did not even defend themselves from the attackers,” according to a source from the Archbishopric, who spoke under condition of anonymity. “They came to mass at eight in the morning, then left the sanctuary and after walking two blocks a patrol set off an alarm. Then the people who were waiting started to attack.”

According to the source, the women threw themselves on the ground to avoid the blows and, as a result of the violence, 13 of them were transported to the local hospital at Ambrosio Grillo, while the other three received first aid on-site.

“It was simply abuse: there was no reason to attack anybody,” noted the source, adding that during the course of Sunday night various other confrontations took place between residents who participated in the aggression and others, opposed to the act.

“The majority of people in El Cobre have been indignant about the beatings,” said the source.

Policías y turbas paramilitares golpearon el domingo a dieciséis Damas de Blanco a la salida del Santuario Nacional de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, confirmó el lunes una fuente del Arzobispado de Santiago de Cuba a la publicación digital Diario de Cuba.

“Ellas no ofendían a nadie, ni siquiera se defendieron de los golpes”.Vinieron a misa a las ocho de la mañana, luego salieron del Santuario y a dos cuadras una patrulla activó la alarma y entonces, las personas que esperaban, comenzaron la golpiza”, explicó la fuente.

Dijo que las mujeres se lanzaron al suelo para evitar los golpes y, como resultado de las agresiones, trece de ellas tuvieron que ser trasladadas al hospital local Ambrosio Grillo y otras tres recibieron en la calle los primeros auxilios.

“Ha sido un abuso, no hay motivos para golpear a nadie”, apuntó el religioso y añadió que durante la noche del domingo se produjeron otros incidentes en El Cobre entre vecinos que participaron en la agresión y otros que rechazaron el acto de repudio.

“La mayoría de la gente de El Cobre ha reaccionado con indignación a los golpes”, señaló la fuente.

The Cuban state business Albet Engineering and Systems, linked with the Havana University of Informatic Sciences (UCI), is in control of the private information of ordinary Venezuelan citizens, including their identity cards, according to the Sunday edition of the Caracas daily El Nacional.

The firm has the capacity to manipulate millions of information sets given to it by the Venezuelan government to create new electronic identity cards, thanks to a secret agreement with Caracas, which also excludes the participation of Venezuelan companies.

Albet, “in producing the new identification system for Venezuela, has free access to basic data about Venezuelan citizens, including the issuance of documents,” according to El Nacional, which claims to have access to documents proving their claims.

“The contract [between Albet and Caracas] has confidentiality clauses that prevent national companies from getting involved,” according to the documents.

La empresa estatal cubana Albet Ingeniería y Sistemas, vinculada a la Universidad de Ciencias Informáticas (UCI), de La Habana, está controlando los datos de los ciudadanos venezolanos, incluidos sus documentos de identidad, informó el domingo el diario El Nacional, de Caracas.

La empresa tiene capacidad para manipular millones de datos que el Gobierno venezolano le ha entregado para elaborar nuevas cédulas electrónicas de identidad, gracias a un convenio secreto que excluyó la participación de técnicos venezolanos, indicó el diario.

Albet “elabora la nueva identificación para Venezuela, tiene acceso libre a la base de datos de los ciudadanos, incluso a la expedición de los documentos”, informó El Nacional, que dijo haber tenido acceso a documentos que probarían la información.

“El contrato tiene cláusulas de confidencialidad que impiden a los técnicos nacionales conocer el proceso”, precisó la información.

Cuban blogger Claudia Cadela has recently published an illuminating account, entitled “Dame Luz” (Give me Light), on her blog in which she reflects on the everyday situation of the people of Havana and Cuba’s interior: “Usually, you get up in the morning and you won’t have gas, or water, or electricity, without knowing why. With luck you might find out, some hours later, the precise cause of the lack of electricity.”

For her part, independent journalist Magalis Otero emphasizes the difficulty of going through a day without reliable electricity, from “alumbrón to alumbrón, explaining that the few groceries that the average Cuban can buy on a worker’s salary soon spoil in a non-working refrigerator.

The situation worsens in summer, when children, at home on their vacations from school, cannot even distract themselves from the heat with the Cuban state’s already scant TV programming.

The schedule of the irregularity of the electricity in Cuba, Otero explains, is quite fixed: power is cut off at eight in the morning for a period of approximately four to six hours, when it recovers until nightfall, at which point “you are left with no option.”
